Short Mat Season has drawn to a close

This winter's Short Mat season has drawn to a close. Bowling indoors on a 45 foot mat is challenging but great fun and we welcome and encourage more members to sign up next year. With 8 leagues, open bowling times, Saturday jitneys, and club championships, there were both casual and competitive offerings. This past season's convenor, Tom Gwinnett, summed up the season nicely:
This season started with the National Championships in November held in Virgil Ontario which resulted in Obed Nnewe, Fred Gundel and Dave Burrows winning a bronze in the Triples, and Marion Brunton, Sophie Burrows, Penny Heneke and Dave Burrows winning silver in the Fours. Not a bad start to our season. Just wait until next year!
In the club we introduced a new league on Monday morning which like all the leagues was filled immediately. Leagues seem to be more and more popular perhaps at the expense of open bowling.
We had 85 members this year, good but still not back to pre-covid numbers of just over 100. If you can do something to encourage a new member for next season, please do it.
One of the amazing features of this year was the quality of the new bowlers. For the “old bowlers” it perhaps fore-shadowed the future, oh dear.
A great shout out to all those who volunteered whether as a spare, draw master, kitchen help or any of the other myriad small tasks that no-one thinks about but still have to be done. Thank you, I never had to ask twice which made my life really easy.
Have a great outdoor season but remember, Lawn Bowling is only practice for Short Mat (lol). Enjoy.
Tom
